Get Your Golden Glow Back Again!

Your 60s are a time of grace, wisdom, and strength. Our sixties are also a time when the careless days of our youth lay roadmaps all over our faces. But welcome to your new chapter, and your skin, like a well-loved book, tells a story of our lives well-lived and should be celebrated and pampered, just a little.

But as we enter this decade, our skin’s needs change. It can become thinner, drier, and more fragile, with a reduction in collagen, elastin, and natural oils. Fine lines and wrinkles may become more prominent, and “age spots” or sun spots can appear.

The good news is, it’s not too late to start a smart and consistent skincare routine, which can make a world of difference. It’s not about turning back the clock—it’s about nurturing your skin so it can look and feel its healthiest and most radiant. Let’s make 60 look the best it’s ever been!

The Essential Daily Routine

The key to great skin at any age is a routine that cleanses, treats, and protects, but mostly is doable for you. Whether you want to use a ten step Korean skincare routine or something far more simple, like me, it’s all out there. For mature skin, the best focus is on gentleness and hydration.

These are my 3 must haves:

Cetaphil Cleanser

Morning Routine: Protect & Prepare

  1. Gentle Cleanser: Start your day with a mild, hydrating cleanser. Avoid harsh, foaming soaps that can strip your skin of its natural oils. A creamy or milky cleanser will help maintain your skin’s moisture barrier, leaving it feeling soft, not tight. My go-to is Cetaphil Face Wash. It is easy on the skin and the eyes and never leaves a film.

  2. Hydrating Moisturizer: Thinner skin needs extra moisture. Choose a rich, nourishing day cream that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin. These will help lock in hydration and plump up the skin, temporarily minimizing the appearance of fine lines. If it has a sunscreen, it’s a bonus! I use a simple, affordable one like Oil of Olay Regenerist with an SPF of 25 to start my day off right. I’m more of a one-stop-shop type of girl and get on with my day.

  3. Sunscreen (Non-Negotiable): This is the single most important step in your routine. A lifetime of sun exposure is the primary cause of age spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single day, rain or shine. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are great options for sensitive skin.

  4. Antioxidant Serum: This is your morning superpower. I haven’t yet tried one, but I feel this would be a great addition to my routine. A serum with Vitamin C is a must. It’s a powerful antioxidant that protects your skin from environmental damage, brightens your complexion, and helps stimulate collagen production. Look for a serum in an opaque, air-tight bottle to maintain its potency. I know there are a lot of them out there, but do your research and find one that works for you and fits in your budget.

Evening Routine: Repair & Restore

  1. Double Cleanse: If you wear makeup or sunscreen, consider a double cleanse if you have time and inclination to do so. Start with a cleansing oil or balm to dissolve makeup and impurities, then follow with your gentle cream cleanser to thoroughly clean the skin without stripping it.
  2. Targeted Treatment: This is where you address specific concerns.
    • Retinoids: A dermatologist-recommended retinoid (a derivative of Vitamin A) is a gold standard for mature skin. It can help increase cell turnover, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and improve skin texture. Start with a low concentration a few times a week and build up as your skin tolerates it, as it can be irritating.
    • Peptides: If retinoids are too harsh, peptides are a fantastic alternative. These amino acid chains signal your skin to produce more collagen, leading to firmer, more elastic skin over time.
    • Exfoliation (Gentle): As cell turnover slows, a gentle exfoliant can help reveal a brighter complexion. Look for a product with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic acid, and only use it once or twice a week to avoid irritation.

  3. Rich Night Cream: Use a heavier moisturizer at night to support your skin’s natural repair process. Look for ingredients that nourish and replenish, like shea butter, squalane, or omega fatty acids. Don’t forget to apply your products to your neck and décolleté as well!

Since I like to have a simple and quick routine, I use the Oil of Olay Retinol 24. This one seems to hit all the boxes listed above without being overly harsh. Again, do your research and choose what’s right for you.
