As we approach the end of another year, it is a good time to reflect on the past year. Remember it is not the big wins that always matter. The little wins count up as well. On my journey to become healthier, I haven’t succeeded every day. However, if I compare the days I’ve won to the days I haven’t, I find there are more winning days. In my resolutions for next year, I plan on avoiding broad goals. I won’t say things like, “I’m going to lose all those pounds and look the best I’ve ever been.” Instead, I want to try each day to meet the healthy living goals I set. If I don’t meet them, I won’t beat myself up about it.
This is not the time in my life to make a list of all the things I’ve never had time to do. I can’t even hope to accomplish everything that I never had time to do while raising kids and working. I’m not getting on a different treadmill! At this time of my life, I can be kinder to myself and start to like who I am. As I get older, I want to like who I am. I want to appreciate what I’ve done. I want to have a clear vision of what I want to do as I travel the next years of my life. I want to make these years happy, healthy ones.
So when making a resolution for New Year’s, make a resolution that is kind to you. Be kind when you slip up, be happy when the days you keep it out number the days you don’t. And, most importantly, enjoy the journey along the way! See you next year!
